Sunday Snapshot: {How 'Bout Them Dawgs!}

As the wife of a serious UGA football fan who was a very good sport and agreed to attend a local FCC get-together that was planned to begin at the same time as kick-off for the Georgia/Florida game yesterday, I present my boys in their Georgia gear...

And we did make it home in time to see the 4th quarter and watch the Dawgs beat the Gators. :-)

Sunday Snapshot: {Catch!}

We are having some absolutely gorgeous weather in Florida right now, and we are taking advantage of it and spending time outdoors. The girls had a lot of fun with this velcro "catch" game this afternoon.

Sunday Snapshot: {Bunk Beds!}

Well, we finally caved under pressure and did it...we assembled the girls' beds into bunk beds. They have been sleeping on them as separate twin beds, but yesterday, hubby brought in the rails, ladder, and hardware from the storage shed and began "Operation Bunk Bed." With the possible exception of realizing that we had the side of the bed where the ladder went next to the wall and having to remedy that particular problem, everything went remarkably well.

MJ is proud resident of the top bunk, and K has the bottom bunk. M just wanted to be in the picture. :-)

Of course this led to rearranging their whole room...

And realizing that I am going to have to get another storage piece because we lost a whole bed's worth of underbed storage space.

And just a couple of cute pictures to finish things out...

The girls love their "new" bunkbeds. And thankfully, MJ can make her own bed, because making up the top bunk is...everything other moms with bunk beds have warned me about...

A Church Mouse Tale

If you are on my FB list, you have read this story already, but I thought I would share for anyone else who might happen to read my blog. If you are like me, a good laugh is always appreciated.

Anyway, we had a visitor at our church on Sunday morning. Here's what happened...

My husband was preaching, and saw people looking and pointing at something behind him. Turns out there was a mouse on the ceiling over the piano. He noticed it, talked about it for a little while, then went back to his sermon. Then one of the deacons went back and got a broom and a bucket. At that point, Hubby (C) asked him to just wait since the mouse was just hanging out on the ceiling. Sermon continues until the mouse falls off the ceiling and drops down on the floor. Ladies are starting to climb up on the pews at this point, and C realized they were just going to have to deal with the mouse. So here are C (the pastor), the deacon with the broom, and 2 of our young adult guys (one of whom had a basket he had found somewhere) chasing this mouse around the front of the sanctuary during the service while everyone else is watching and laughing (and for those who were afraid of mice, checking for the closest exits). Meanwhile, one of our ladies was videoing the whole thing with her iPhone. Anyway, two of the men cornered the mouse in a room off of the sanctuary. C composed himself and finished his sermon, and we got out of church about 15 minutes late.

I don't know that I have ever laughed that much during a church service. Definitely one to remember!

"I Miss Them"

Well, I said I was going to write this blog post the day this conversation happened, but I’m just now getting around to it. All of this actually took place on the morning of September 22, so I’m only a week and a half behind on sitting down to type this out. With that in mind, I hope I can remember enough of the details...

On that Thursday morning, I was in the van with MJ and M. We had dropped K off at her school and were on the way to MJ’s school. I don’t remember all of the details about the conversation I was having with MJ, but it was a fairly normal morning-on-the-way-to-school discussion with a 5 year old who likes to talk A LOT and ask A LOT of questions.

So as we are sitting in the (very long) car rider line at her elementary school, MJ asks, “How did I get in China?” So, I gave her the most straightforward answer I could, which was, “You were born there. Your birthparents lived there, so that is where you were born.”

We have talked about birthparents a number of times before, but it has been awhile (other than reading her lifebook) since we have really discussed it. The rest of our conversation went something like this:

MJ: Well, where are they now?

Me: As far as I know, they are still in China. We may never know more than that, though.

MJ: I miss them.

[At this point, internally, I was saying, “Wow...” Once again, I was faced with the reality of all my 5 1/2 year old daughter has gone through in her short lifetime.]

Me: Well, you know what? It is perfectly okay for you to miss them. Just remember that the reason they were not able to take care of a baby had nothing to do with you. Sometimes there are very grown-up problems and decisions that have nothing to do with children.

Me: Are you okay?

MJ: I’m fine, Mama.

Me: I love you, MJ.

MJ: I love you, too, Mama.

And then, I dropped her off at school, just like any other day, saying an extra prayer that she really would be fine. And she was...

[As an added note, I’m pretty sure she told me more than once in the course of that conversation that she missed her birthparents, but I waited too long to write this post. Note to self...write the post the day the event happens.]

Sunday Snapshot: {My Big Girl in Action}

Yesterday, we had a little taste of fall in Florida, and that meant time spent outside enjoying an absolutely beautiful day. Since MJ is constantly in motion, she made a great subject for Sunday Snapshot...

She rode her bike...

Spent some time on her scooter...

Demonstrated her hula-hooping skills...

And did some serious bubble blowing...

It was a fun way to spend an absolutely beautiful morning!
